Do I need a doctor’s referral to receive treatment?

Functional Medicine treatment (Fatigue, hormone health, pelvic health, sexual dysfunction, optimal performance, etc):n No physician’s referral is necessary however we are just one part of your team to help you reach your health goals so should you decide that you want us to reach out to your PCP, with your permission, we would be happy to discuss our program with them. We leave this decision up to our patients.

Physical Therapy (muscle and joint pain, pelvic health, sexual dysfunction): Direct Access refers to visiting a physical therapist without a prescription or referral. You don't have a prescription for physical therapy? Nothing to worry about!

Physical therapists can be contacted directly without a physician's prescription or referral. All fifty states and the District of Columbia have made a ruling enabling patients “direct access” to physical therapy services and programs.

In other words, the government made it acceptable for individuals to go straight to a physical therapy clinic of their choice and receive the resources and treatment they require.

Can I go to any physical therapy clinic?

Thanks to Direct Access laws, you can!

The APTA’s website states, “Direct access means the removal of the physician referral mandated by state law to access physical therapist services for evaluation and treatment. Every state, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands allow for evaluation and some form of treatment without a physician referral.” This means you can choose what clinic you want to receive treatment from without waiting for your primary care doctor to refer you to them. No referral or prescription is necessary!

Do PT treatments hurt?

Physical therapy is meant to alleviate pain rather than exacerbate it. However, when you restore function, it's possible that your pain levels will fluctuate. You may suffer some momentary discomfort but always at the level that you are comfortable with. You are the boss! Your comfort level is important to us and your healing process. Rest assured that some discomfort is a common side effect of physical therapy and should not be taken as a cause for alarm.

Communication with our therapist will help to reduce any discomfort you may feel during your physical therapy treatments. We want you to be pain-free and back to your normal activities as soon as possible.

What should I know about physical therapy?

It's critical to understand that the overall goal of physical therapy is to restore pain-free mobility and function while also preventing the injury or pain from recurring.

Our physical therapists assess your movement patterns, determine the source of your pain, treat what they find with manual therapy and modalities such as electrohydraulic Shockwave and work with you to manage or eliminate it completely.

Physical therapists are highly trained medical professionals who specialize in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. They collaborate with physicians if necessary to ensure that your treatment plan is as effective and efficient as possible. Physical therapy is a medical, hands-on approach to pain relief and function restoration.

While each patient's condition and pain are unique, our physical therapist will use a variety of hands-on techniques, exercises, and equipment to quickly relieve pain and restore function.

How is my physical therapy treatment progress tracked?

As you go through your PT visits, you should see a considerable improvement in your discomfort and function.

The most evident way to measure your improvement and progress is to keep track of your pain and mobility levels as you proceed through your physical therapy program.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a holistic approach to creating health taking into consideration how our biological processes work together in our one system. This is in contrast to a conventional medicine approach that typically focuses on one body part at a time not taking into consideration how the systems can interact with each other. Functional medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of the illness or presenting symptoms.

Functional medicine asks how and why an illness or presenting symptoms occurred and then creates a systematic approach to addressing those issues.

It is an approach to patient care that views health

and illness as part of a continuum in which all components of the human biological systeminteract dynamically with the environment, producing patterns and effects that change over time. The goal is not simply to treat the symptoms, but to treat the underlying cause to alleviate the symptoms. We often tell our patients that you arrive at our office with several symptoms and systems that are related to your discomfort, fatigue, less than optimal hormone balance etc. So instead of treating addressing each symptom with a drug or medication, we find out where in this forest of symptoms or imbalances did most of the issues start. Then we ask, ‘why did it start there?’ And a treatment strategy is set up to address the why along the most likely organ system(s) from which the symptoms developed. This often allows significant improvement or elimination of the issue without simply treating the symptoms with medications and then treating the medications side effects with more medications.

Take thyroid function for example. In conventional medicine when you are diagnosed with a thyroid issue you are prescribed a thyroid hormone to replace the thyroid hormone that your body does not appear to be producing. Then one hormone is measured and monitored to see how effective this treatment strategy is. However many people after receiving the thyroid hormone replacement either still feel unwell or eventually experience the same symptoms or different symptoms coming back over time. When they go to the doctor they are often told everything looks fine. But they don’t feel fine and subsequently they are given more medication to address more symptoms. Unfortunately no one ever asks the question, “why was your thyroid hormone low in the first place?” Or “What can we do to boost thyroid hormone naturally without needing to take a medication?”

This scenario is exactly what happened to New You Health and Wellness founder Stacey Roberts. And it lead her on a multi-year journey to find optimal health and wellness for herself and then subsequently share her success with others.

Functional Medicine and Chronic Illness

Chronic illness is an illness that persists past six months and usually follows declining function in one or more of the body’s systems that had been going on for a period of time, even years. Optimizing health requires improving the underlying dysfunction that have contributed to the state of imbalance or illness.

Functional medicine provides tools and protocols to allow clinicians to identify the underlying dysfunction and assistant in balancing the physiology to create and move toward optimal health.

Most illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes are not predetermined by genetics. Rather, research has found that “our life span is largely epigenetically determined.” This means that “diet and other environmental influences can influence our life span” (and health) “by changing the epigenetic information” (Pal and Tyler, 2016)*. Epigenetics means “above the genes” and relates to the environment outside and inside your system.

In other words It is how our genes are expressed by our environment and lifestyle rather than our physical inheritance that contributes to disease development.
Lifestyle choices, diet, stress, some activities influence the turning on and off of gene expression which influences the development of symptoms, illness or full blown disease.

Our experienced Functional Medicine providers at New You Health and Wellness directly assess and address these parameters to help you become in charge of your own health outcomes.

We recognize that a person’s environment is not just what is on the outside, but what is on the inside as well.

The Functional Medicine approach at New You Health and Wellness is “patient centered” not “symptom centered” and creates a partnership with our patients through personalized programs that get results.

Do you use blood tests or other tests to determine the underlying cause(s)?

Yes, blood test and other test results are often helpful in determining the underlying issues. However, listening to our patient’s story and asking questions to identify patterns that patients may have not been aware of are as valuable as blood tests which are a snapshot of one period of time.

We often suggest further testing to confirm that we are on the right track or to further personalize a program. These tests may include urine analysis, stool analysis, saliva testing or blood tests. But each person’s program is unique to their own experience. Any tests that can be done with the patient’s physician and covered by their insurance are welcomed to keep costs down.

Do you accept my insurance?

We strive to provide the highest quality of care for our patients and see all of our patients privately, one-on-one. In order to provide this level of care and not be dictated to by insurances companies about the type of care we provide, we have chosen not to contract with insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid.at the time of service. We accept all forms of payment, including flexible savings and health savings accounts. We are happy to work with all of our patients to determine their plan, including frequency of appointments, based on their needs.

That being said, you may be able to receive reimbursement from your insurance company based on  your “out of network” benefits. If this is of interest to you, you can obtain information regarding your coverage by contacting your insurance company and requesting information regarding coverage for “out of network physical therapy.” We are also happy to provide you with a superbill (itemized document) which has the necessary information to submit to your insurance company. Seeking and obtaining reimbursement for services is the sole responsibility of the patient.

What types of issues do you see?

We treat any musculoskeletal injury (injuries or pain related to joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons or bones).

  • Pelvic Health Issues
  • Sexual Health Issues

Please see drop down menus for specific diagnosis at the top of the page.

Do I Have to Have Internal Assessments if I am Seeing You for Pelvic Floor Issues or Sexual Health?

Internal treatments are an option but they are not necessary for everyone to feel better AND will only ever be done if you are comfortable with it. Many treatment techniques including Softwave treatment are done externally with great results.

However if your diagnosis related to pelvic health or sexual health would benefit from internal treatment this will be discussed with each patient and decided upon together. You will only ever receive treatments that are explained thoroughly to you and that you are comfortable with.

What are the costs?

Treatment costs typically start with 195.00- 235.00 for an hour of personalized one on one treatment. However sexual health and pelvic health can at times require more elaborate treatment strategies and more extensive Softwave treatment. For example an ED treatment will be between 250-300.00. But this will vary per individual as well. Should you not be sure that you want to hit the ground running with our full consultation and treatments we offer an abbreviated consult and treatment for 79.00-99.00. This lasts for 30 minutes and helps you become more comfortable with us if you not quite sure you are ready to start right away.

Will I receive more than Softwave treatment?

Typically yes, unless you are on a maintenance program of Softwave only. However all patients when they have a full initial consultation for at least 60 minutes will receive a holistic comprehensive treatment plan that can include Softwave therapy. And what makes us different from other clinics is we look at many different areas, are not dictated to by insurance companies about your treatment, and look at your situation from a holistic approach which means you get the benefit of all of the knowledge of our experienced therapists one on one addressing many areas that could be contributing to inflammation and pain. This includes a biomechanical assessment but it also when appropriate includes a review of your supplementation program and your nutritional plan as both can be effective strategies to help you get rid of your issue.

Do you do manual (hands on) treatment?

We are manual therapists with years of experience performing manual therapy when necessary and believe for musculoskeletal health and pelvic health manual therapy is integral to lasting improvement.

Do I need a doctors referral to see you?

We are always happy to partner with your other healthcare providers in your care. If you have a physician referral, please bring it to your first appointment. If you do not have a referral, we are still able to see you for your initial evaluation! The state of Wisconsin has direct-access for physical therapy, meaning that you are able to seek out physical therapy without a referral by a physician under certain circumstances. However, in order to continue treatment you may be required to see your physician. This is discussed with you at your initial evaluation.

How Are Treatments Performed?

Along with our evaluation and manual therapy we offer Acoustic Wave or “True” Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT) which is noninvasive and many tiimes is painless. At times there can be a sensitivity felt over an area of inflammation but the level is always controlled by how you are feeling.. Gel is applied to the treatment area and acoustic waves are then released over the treatment area.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments needed depends on the indication that is being treated. Generally, most indications require 5-7 treatments. Each treatment session takes between 15-20 minutes.

What Types Of Results Are Expected?

Beneficial effects are often experienced after only one or two treatments. The technology has a high success rate per clinical studies. Patients treated report being pain-free and the true acoustic wave therapy can also dramatically increase the results of other regenerative treatments.

What Are The Possible Side Effects?

A truly amazing feat, this device has virtually no side effects. Patients can return to work immediately after treatment and there is typically no downtime. In rare cases, patients may get dizzy from the flashing light that occurs during treatment.
