What is menopause and why does it occur?
Menopause is a natural part of life that every woman goes through from the ages of 45 to 54. It is the period of 12 months following a woman’s final menstrual cycle, and although it usually occurs on its own, it can be triggered by external factors related to stress.
As a woman ages, they experience significant changes in their bodies. These changes directly affect the production of the two female hormones: estrogen and progesterone.
Estrogen and progesterone are what regulates the menstrual cycle and also what allows a woman to have a normal, healthy pregnancy. These hormones are produced by the ovaries. Before menopause starts (the period known as perimenopause), hormone levels begin to fluctuate and some symptoms may occur. Perimenopause lasts many years before menopause starts.
The levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate and as a result women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles, or exceptionally heavy, painful bleeding during a period, which can last for a long time before menopause actually begins.
