What is PCOS?
PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects many women worldwide. Women with PCOS may have irregular, absent or prolonged menstrual cycles, as well as high levels of hormones called androgens.
According to Mayo Clinic, the most common symptoms of PCOS include:
- Irregular periods: The most common symptom of PCOS is infrequent, irregular, or prolonged menstrual cycles. For instance, you could have fewer than nine periods per year, more than 35 days between periods, or abnormally heavy periods.
- Excess androgen: Elevated levels of testosterone can cause physical symptoms such as excess facial and body hair (hirsutism), severe acne, and male-pattern baldness.
- Polycystic ovaries: Your ovaries may be enlarged, with multiple follicles present. Some have eggs in them and some are empty. As a result, the ovaries may not function properly.
How can physical therapy and functional medicine help PCOS?
Functional medicine can help women with PCOS optimize their hormone balance, decrease their symptoms and if trying to get pregnant, fertility can be improved with natural treatments. Many times medication is not necessary to decrease or even eliminate the symptoms of PCOS. Stacey Roberts has successfully worked with thousands of women with PCOS since 2004. She can help support you with a personalized program that can address the common symptoms and the most common underlying cause with her 5 step program for PCOS.
Regarding physical therapy and PCOS:
According to Physiopedia, “by targeting menstrual irregularities and promoting ovulation, exercise training has shown significant improvement in 50% of women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.” But not all exercises work for everyone so at New You Health and Wellness we develop a program that is right for you.
New You Health and Wellness has a dedicated, experienced team eager to assist you in feeling like yourself again! If you’re ready to unlock a customized treatment plan, contact our Wauwatosa, WI office today.
