Have you been struggling with low libido? It’s completely normal to experience varying libido. However, if your libido is consistently low, it may indicate a less than optimal hormone balance.
At New You Health and Wellness, our therapists are experts at holistically treating all forms of sexual dysfunction. We can help you understand what is causing your low libido and formulate a customized plan to help get you back on track.
What causes low libido?
Both men and women can experience low libido. According to Mayo Clinic, a few causes of low libido in men include:
Physical issues
Weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol can all have an impact on male erections. They can also cause low energy and a negative self-image, resulting in a significant loss of libido. This can often be remedied through diet, exercise, and addressing underlying causes such as low T. Low testosterone can be addressed effectively without taking testosterone.
Medications
Many antidepressant medications used to treat anxiety and depression, such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Lexapro, have been shown to reduce libido in men and, in some cases, to delay orgasm. While some men experience no side effects, others may experience significant issues and should consult their medication’s prescriber. Do not stop taking your medication. At New You health and Wellness we can work with you when you are on medications already.
Low libido in women, on the other hand, can be caused by:
Menopause and birth control
Many oral contraceptive pills have been linked to decreased libido. Menopause for some women can bring a slew of other issues, but the fluctuation/decrease in hormones during this stage of life can significantly impact libido.
Vulvodynia
This condition describes chronic pain or discomfort around the vulva, which can lead to lower sex drive.
